Sawasdee is an all-encompassing greeting, saluation and more, similar to Hawaii’s “aloha”, so if we could just figure out how to pronounce it correctly, we would be well-covered verbally. Last night, one of my new Thai friends gave us a Thai to English dictionary. It cleared up any confusion about why there are so many miscommunications — the dictionary words were misspelled and misused. That book continues to be a source of great entertainment for us, as do the local newspapers and ads.

We’re having another sunny day, in the midst of the monsoon season that we intercepted. I’m staying inside and/or out of the sun again today as I, the Queen of Sunscreen, got sunburnt two days ago. Guy’s down at the beach, partially covered as he got a bit too much of the sunshine, too.

Yesterday, we made use of our scooter and circumnavigated this little island, which turned out to be larger than the map illustrated. Our maps were designed and published by advertisers only, not cartogrophers, and not a single one has an accurate scale. We did find the tiger zoo and had our photos taken while seated next to a beautiful Bengal tiger. I was reluctant at first as I was uncharacteristically dressed in red – a no-no around wild animals like tigers and rhinos. However, this was hardly a wild beast, more like a photo prop. Still, he was large and strong enough to be intimidating if you let your mind imagine things, which I did. I’ll send the photos when I can and you tell me if my smile looks more nervous than happy. Guy, of course, looks great in the photos.

We’re considering taking a day trip over to a tiny neighboring island called Pha-ngan. I’m not sure of the correct spelling of that, or many other words anymore. Pha-ngan is famous for its full moon parties, which are held every single month and now attract up to 10,000 . We’re planning our trip to avoid that date and those crowds. We may have to admit to being old – Guy moreso than me, of course.

I’m off now. more later as it happens, or without too much delay

thanks for all the well wishes

Amy & Guy
